Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea, commonly known as "the clap" or "the drip", is a common infectious disease. It is estimated that there are more than 700,000 new cases of gonorrhea every year. The disease can be spread through the mouth, vagina, penis or anus. The infection spreads easily and occurs most often in people that have many sex partners. Some people may be infected with gonorrhea but not show any symptoms. When symptoms do occur, they typically occur within 2-10 days after exposure, but can take up to 30 days.

Symptoms Include
Men - Burning and pain while urinating, increased urinary frequency or urgency, discharge from the penis, red or swollen opening of the penis, tender or swollen testicles and sore throat.

Women - Vaginal discharge, burning and pain while urinating, increased urination, sore throat, painful sexual intercourse, severe pain in lower abdomen and fever

What causes Gonorrhea?
Gonorrhea is caused by Neisseria Gonorrhoeae, a bacterium that can grow and multiply easily in mucus membranes of the body. Gonorrhea bacteria can grow in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes in women, and in the urethra in women and men. The bacteria can also develop in the mouth, throat and anus.

What happens if I don't get tested?
Untreated gonorrhea can cause serious and permanent problems in both women and men. In women, if left untreated, the infection can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, which may damage the fallopian tubes and can even lead to infertility, and untreated gonorrhea infection could increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy, a dangerous condition for both the mother and baby.

In men, gonorrhea can cause epididymitis, a painful condition of the testicles that can sometimes lead to infertility if left untreated. Without prompt treatment, gonorrhea can also affect the prostate and can lead to scarring inside the urethra, making urination difficult.

Gonorrhea can spread to the blood or joints. This condition can be life-threatening. Also, people with gonorrhea can more easily contract HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

TestYourPackage Gonorrhea Testing
This Gonorrhea test is performed with a urine specimen, a swab is NOT needed. The test uses nucleic acid amplification to detect the presence of the bacterium. The nucleic acid amplification test has been proven to be more accurate than the swab test.

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis. It is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States. Chlamydia infections are easily spread because it often causes no symptoms and the disease may be unknowingly passed to sexual partners. It is estimated that 75% of infections in women and 50% of infections in men are without symptoms.

Sexually active individuals and individuals with multiple partners are at highest risk. Untreated Chlamydia can lead to pelvic infection and infertility.

Only approximately 30% of women will have symptoms due to Chlamydia, hence screening of sexually active women for Chlamydia is necessary to diagnose and treat asymptomatic women in order to decrease the risk of developing complications. Women who do have Chlamydia symptoms may note vaginal discharge, burning while urinating or abdominal pain.

Chlamydia Symptoms Include
While many Chlamydia symptoms are not usually apparent, when they do occur it is usually within 1-3 weeks of contact and can include the following.

Men - Burning sensation during urination, discharge from the penis, testicular tenderness or pain, rectal discharge or pain.

Women - Vaginal discharge, burning sensation during urination, painful sexual intercourse, symptoms of PID, salpingitis, perihepatitis (liver inflammation similar to hepatitis) (see individual diseases for symptoms), rectal pain or discharge.

What happens if I don't get tested for Chlamydia?
If you do not get tested for Chlamydia, you run the risk of several health problems.

Men - Chlamydia can cause a condition called nongonococcal urethritis (NGU), an infection of the urethra, epididymitis, an infection of the epididymis or proctitis, an inflammation of the rectum.

Women - Untreated Chlamydia infections in women can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease which can cause scarring of the fallopian tubes and result in infertility.
